Bonnie Mincu Biography

“I think of a painting as a stage, with elements playing light and dark characters that may call for special color in the moment. Sometimes trees glow red, or dance. Buildings may brood in the mist."

Bonnie’s sudden immersion in art came as a complete surprise to her.  Although art had always interested her, she had built her career in business. Her life and passion changed dramatically on vacation in Istanbul, in 1995, when she happened upon an artisan's studio. She remained there enthralled for hours, watching doll-makers, potters and craftspeople at work. She left Turkey the next day with an inexplicable burning to create visual art.

Immediately upon returning home to New York, she immersed herself in oil painting, craving the flow of texture and color. She initially studied privately for several years with a realist painter, a protégé of Daniel Greene and Ted Seth Jacobs who taught in the tradition of the old masters and contemporary realism. Bonnie furthered her study by taking intensive workshops throughout North America and Europe with contemporary artists she most admired, including acclaimed colorists Stephen Quiller and Camille Przewodek.   In finding her own artistic voice, she initially related most to the style of the early California Impressionists.

Her vivid landscapes have now evolved to a mosaic-like presentation of deceptively simplified shapes within compositions of depth and complexity.  As a colorist, she begins every painting by determining the feeling of color she wants to convey. She works primarily in oil, creating landscapes, genre, interiors and still-life.

Bonnie sees her paintings as creation of a story, where the details are often implied rather than spelled out.  She might show an interior where someone has just left the room, a village where an untold flirtation is taking place, a city street where colleagues pause for a juicy bit of gossip.  Her dramatic landscapes feature distinct characters in the form of colored buildings and uniquely shaped indigenous trees.

A native of Glencoe, Illinois, Bonnie lives and paints in New York City’s Greenwich Village.
